Scooters have always been a preferred choice of people who love to ride a bike but in a simpler way. Riding a scooter is much like riding a bicycle, especially the ones without gears. The scooter market in India is rising constantly with the segment reported a 3 percent increase in the sales in April-August 2017 as compared to the same period last year. Some of the most famous scooters, in terms of sales, in India are Honda Activa, Honda Dio, TVS Jupiter and Suzuki Access 125.
The scooter industry of India contributed a whopping 34.15 percent in the total two-wheeler sales in the last five-month period. An estimated of 28,90,943 units were sold by different scooter dealers and manufacturers in the country, which is 18.27 percent higher than the last year. The most amazing thing is that the growth in scooter sales is even higher than the increase in the sales of motorcycle and moped sectors which were reported 7.89 percent and -8.60 percent year over year.
Scooters are definitely one of the most convenient modes of transportation for people of all ages. It is much easier to learn to ride a scooter as compared to a bike. This is why these vehicles are very much popular among girls, women and elderly people. The only negative point is their low acceleration capacity and smaller fuel tank, which is also being tackled by the auto manufacturers with the implementation of the new powertrain technologies in the newly launched and upcoming vehicles. The increase in sales of these two-wheelers also points toward the continuously bettering socio-economic conditions of women/girls in the Indian society.
Let’s take a look at some of the statistics regarding scooter sales in April-August 2017 in India.
Thanks to its leading two-wheelers like Honda Activa and Honda Dio, the Japanese Motorcycle Manufacturer, Honda, continues to be at the top of the scooter segment chart. It presently holds a market share of 59.22 percent of the industry in terms of sales in the last five months in the country.
The company has recently launched a new scooter, named 110cc Cliq, an affordable two-wheeler which will mainly target the rural sector of India. The 110cc Cliq is priced at Rs. 42,000 which is the lowest price among all available scooters in the market. Then, there is the company’s bestseller scooter, Honda Activa, that continues to be the no. 1 selling scooter in the country. As per a rough estimation, about 3,35,595 units of Honda Activa (Activa 125, 4G and Activa i) were sold August 2017 in India, which is about 19.52 more than the same period last year.
The second position, in terms of sales, is acquired by TVS Jupiter, which is arguably India’s second best selling scooter. The main reason for the growth in the sale of this TVS two-wheeler is its consistent performance and high user-satisfaction rate. The company reportedly sold close to 81,277 TVS Jupiter units only in the last month, which is more than 57 percent higher than its August 2016 sales.
Hero MotoCorp’s Maestro is the third most popular scooter in India, according to the sales report of the last month. The vehicle was purchased by more than 43 thousand consumers in August 2017 and reported a year over year growth of 17.13 percent.
Honda’s Dio is the fourth most selling scooter at present in India. The company notified that it has sold close to 39,964 units of Dio in the last month, which is about 12.64 percent higher than its August 2016 sales.
The fifth position is hold by the Suzuki Access 125 in the domestic scooter sales chart which is also a very popular scooter here. The vehicle was sold to as many as 39,550 customers during the period and marked a growth of 58.81 percent YoY in sales.
Yamaha Fascino is a relatively newer yet equally popular scooter that currently holds the sixth position in terms of scooter sales in the domestic market. According to the company, 21,628 units of this vehicle were sold in August 2017, which is 14.58 percent higher than the same period last year.
The Hero Duet along with Yamaha Ray and Hero Pleasure reported a year over year decline in their sales. Hero Duet holds the seventh position with 20,284 units sale in this month which is about 28.49 percent lower than its August 2016 sales. Around 17,282 units of Yamaha Ray were purchased in August this year as compared to 20,782 units sale in August 2016.
TVS Scooty Pep+, with sales of 14,430 units in the month, secured the ninth position in the bestseller list. The Hero Pleasure goes down by one rank and secures the last position in the top 10 best-selling scooters list.
The trade of automatic scooters is increasing day to day in both domestic market and international market.
